Reassembled it and reinserted the battery. Still didn't work. Took the battery cover off and jiggled the battery around. I was able to get the '0' to show in the display (when it's working properly) but that wouldn't stay. Tried to add shims to position the battery so it would work continually. Nothing I tried worked. I know the calculator will work as evidenced by the fact that it will do so intermittently as I wiggle the battery around.

However the battery is not the same size or configuration as the original. It doesn't fit well and doesn't work for me.

If I can send it back, I will. Edit: after more trouble shooting, I'm thinking the problem is something inside the calculator. Things to watch out for: 1. The nicad batteries leak and corrosion can be a problem to the battery contacts. The ON/OFF switch has too much grease when applied at the factory.
